You're 40 posts deep into someone's profile at midnight. Your thumb slips. A little heart lights up on a photo from 2023 — and a notification lands on their phone with your name on it. There is no worse feeling on the internet.
Why unliking doesn't save you
Unliking removes the like, but the push notification already went out. On both TikTok and Instagram, if their notifications are on, they saw it the moment it happened. You can't unsend curiosity.
Double-tap is a trap
Instagram's double-tap-to-like and TikTok's tap-happy interface are built for engagement, not careful browsing. When you're scrolling deep into someone's history, the interface is actively working against your anonymity.
The fix: browse where you can't like
