How to Check a Seller’s Social Media Before You Buy
That shop in your DMs might be a scam. How to vet a business’s TikTok or Instagram — real comments, real history, real customers — before paying.
Social commerce is huge — and so is social commerce fraud. Before you transfer money to a shop you found on TikTok or Instagram, ten minutes of profile detective work can save you the whole purchase.
What to check
- Account age and history. Scam shops are young. A store with three weeks of posts and 40k followers bought them.
- Comment reality. Open the comments on recent posts. Real customers ask about sizes, shipping and colors. Scam pages have generic praise, emoji spam — or comments turned off entirely.
- Complaint trail. Search the comments for words like "scam", "never arrived", "refund". Victims often warn others right there.
- Consistency. Did the account previously post completely different content? Rebranded hacked accounts are a classic scam vehicle.
Why check anonymously
Scam operators watch their viewers. Interacting from your real account before you've decided invites aggressive DM sales pressure — and tells them who you are. Viewing the profile anonymously lets you inspect posts and read every comment thread without opening that door.
The five-minute rule
If five minutes of reading a shop's comments leaves you unsure, don't buy. Legitimate businesses leave a long, boring, verifiable trail. Scams can fake followers, but they can't fake months of mundane customer conversation.
